The tooling for this kit was originally part of the ’61 Styline series, which included lots of radical custom parts. The original box art showed a red front view of a custom car that couldn’t quite be made from the parts enclosed. I decided to use that same design in the same color but make a scene that resembled vintage Detroit styling studio artwork. So I stretched the proportions and added a gleaming alabaster “city of the future” in the background. The mild custom version is seen taking the turnpike off ramp in the background. The stock version has a vignette background of the salt flats with a man and a woman enjoying the action. The car in the background is the AMT’25 Model T kit with the chopped coupe body. The scene was removed from the kit box and the slot car box. The slot car version was “Photoshopped” by the folks at Round 2. The wheels are from one of my other illustrations, I think. Acrylic on 15” x 20” illustration board, November of 2009.
